Brunch is fast becoming my favourite meal, and I love that there are so many options and that breakfast no longer needs to be based around sweet and sickly foods that are based around pastry, or huge greasy fry ups – although obviously they have their place. I’m not one of the avocado brigade but there’s definitely something to be said for a fresh, vibrant start to the day, and The Barn, Holloway excels at it.
I used to live in Holloway and it certainly wasn’t as nice as it is now. Like everywhere else, there seems to be a much higher volume of nice cafes and little restaurants. I’d heard about the barn but don’t go up there that much – so as Arsenal got ready to lose to Watford up the road, I got ready for eggs and avocados. On sourdough, obvs.
The place was pretty packed, with queues for both the seating at the back and the takeaway bakery at the front. We were seated fairly quick and ordered coffees before I’d even sat down. So far so efficient.
The food came a fair while before said coffees, and was absolutely gorgeous. Perfect creamy scrambled eggs, with lightly smoked salmon and avocado on sourdough with chilli flakes and olive oil – a nice bit of spice for the oily fish and creamy eggs.
Natalie had eggs benedict, which were poached perfectly and served on thick slices of crispy bacon, and more sourdough. The coffee was good too, something they pride themselves on, with specially chosen beans and trained baristas.
The bill was £20 between us – beyond reasonable considering the care behind the presentation and the quality of the ingredients. Not surprised it was busy, I’m sure it’s a regular spot for locals. It’s a little busy and hectic to sit there all day and relax with the papers, and they don’t serve booze but for a decent brunch/lunch it’s a bloody good choice.
